I moved lately in brooklyn, and I was surprised that buildings shut the heat at night around 11:pm and start it back at 5:00 AM.
When I asked the management they said that they comply with laws because the apartment should be warm in the morning because of old and children. Don't we need heat at night more that in the morning?
Does that happen to anyone? Do you depend on electrical heat or you complain?

I don't really have much direct sunlight. But maybe I could get a lamp, or something. I just think it would be neat to grow an orange tree or lime tree, and I have heard that citrus blossoms smell awesome. Should I bother? Or will I just wind up killing it? And where would I buy a potted citrus in NYC anyway?
